SUMMIT SUCCESS!
News from Base Camp Wyeth-
Manager Adrian Rahill and Assistant, Shelia Kavanagh
report
this morning that Pat Falvey, Clare O'Leary, Sherpas;
Pemba Gyalji (the expedition sirdar) Lamababu, Jangbu,
Lhakpa and Nang Chemmi reached the summit of Everest
at 6.45am
on
May 18 2004.

The
Irish Wyeth Everest 2004 Expedition is presently in Nepal,
en-route to Mount Everest. The team comprising of just
three climbers and support, left Ireland on St.Patrick's
Day and will return on June 5th. The expedition is led
by the Irish Himalayan veteran, Pat Falvey for
whom this
is his 4th Everest climb. Falvey summited out of Tibet
on
the North Ridge in 1995 after an earlier attempt there
in '93. Last year
on the jubilee year of the first ascent
and climbing from Nepal and the South Col, Pat was forced
to turn around just some 60 metres from the summit suffering
from hypoxia. It was a day that saw team-mates Mick Murphy
and Ger O Donnell reach the top.
This year as Pat again seeks to reach the top
of Everest for the second time and from "the other side",
he is accompanied by a 32 year old medic, Clare
O Leary from Bandon in County Cork and John Joyce
from Tuam
in County Galway. Both mountaineers were on the
2003 trip
when Clare's ambitions fell foul of a stomach
bug. Imbued with that experience, stronger and
very
focused after
a tremendous year on mountains around the world,
Clare's attempt on the world's highest peak has
the added interest
in Ireland that no Irish woman has yet summitted
Everest.
The Irish team is assisted by a Nepali staff, under the
guidance of Ang Rita Sherpa.
The Irish Wyeth Everest 2004 Expedition is organised
and led by Pat Falvey and is co-sponsored by:
• Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
• Spórt Corrán Tuathail (aka Lowe Alpine Killarney)
• Irish and Worldwide Adventures
