Great tranquil walk varying from the normal route up Mangerton and heading east toward the Horses Glen, we circle Lake Garagarry, the first of 3 lakes in the Glen passing the old slate quarry that was used when Muckross Estate was being built. At the back of the lake we cross the Owengarriff that joins the lakes and ascend steeper ground toward the shoulder of Stoompa. As we approach Stoompa there are great views behind over Killarney town, Muckross and the lakes to the north west and west with the Paps, Lough Guitane, Crohane and the Derrynasaggart mountains to the north east, east and south east.

Along the steep flanks of the Glen, we walk south enjoying spectacular views of the Horses Glen before veering west and entering boggy ground, we ascend toward Mangerton, a mountain with more mentions in early local history than Carrauntoohil. As you approach this large summit plateau you can see the Roughty Valley and Kenmare Bay with the Reeks and Purple mountain in the west-south-west clearly defined depending on the weather. From the summit we drop down steeply onto the spur that divides the Devil's Punchbowl (on the left) and the Horses Glen (on the right), you will find this section one of the most beautiful parts of Mangerton that offers a little adrenaline in windy conditions. From there we circle the Punchbowl and join up the gentle normal route for our descent.

Trek - Easy/ Moderate: An enjoyable day on the hills. Great introduction to hillwalking in beautiful surroundings.

Below is a recommended basic hillwalking gear list. If you have some or most of the items, great! If you cannot please contact us as there is no problem arranging some options from the guide on the day. You will find the more you do hillwalking, the more likely you will be to spend on gear. There are very good reasons why people purchase expensive gear and that is to keep them dry, warm and comforatble even in the most extreme conditions. This is very important during colder conditions. You do not have to buy all of the below unless you are going to do morehillwalking in near future, but if possible try to borrow some of it and we can give you some advice on the day before you buy your own. Also most ski-wear is suitable, although the heavier items, more so in winter.

  • One pair of good walking/mountaineering boots. Waterproof for wet and/or cold

  • Socks

  • Thermal top base

  • Good fleece or softshell.

  • Trekking pants in summer, thermal fleece pants in winter
